Carpenter Ants or Campontonus, are one of the largest of ant species. Mostly black (some are reddish-yellowish), they prefer to live in hollow, moist, decaying wood. Their large mandibles are used for chewing wood or debris in order to form "galleries" or tunnels. A "sawdust" type debris can sometimes be visible. All buildings are susceptible to Carpenter Ant infestation. Colonies can reach up to 50,000 workers! Serious damage to the structure of a home or building may result if left untreated.
